Bio: Jose Daniel Terán is a visionary and talented architect, passionate about his profession and a nature advocate. Born in Quito, Ecuador, in 1982, he is a pioneer in the country for his innovative approach to sustainable, reflective, and environmentally respectful architecture. His practice is characterized by advanced architecture, where he breaks paradigms and redefines the standards of contemporary architectural design.

His early years of academic formation were completed at Quito’s German School. In 2006, he finished his university studies, obtaining a professional degree in Architecture from the Universidad San Francisco de Quito.

He continued his specialized studies in the city of Barcelona, Spain, where he successfully completed the Master’s degree in Biodigital Architecture from the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya in 2009.

After completing his master’s degree, he spent several years in Spain, gaining experience and surrounding himself with top-level architects and mentors. Upon returning to Ecuador, he became involved in significant projects and, finally, founded his own architecture firm, A1 Advanced Architecture (A1 Arquitectura Avanzada).

Currently, he serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of A1 Advanced Architecture, where he has built a remarkable professional trajectory in a short period. He has been awarded 10 international architecture prizes:

  1. Architecture MasterPrize,
  2. LIV Hospitality Design Awards,

  4. International Architecture & Design,
  5. International HOUZEE Design,

  7. Kyoto Global Design Awards,
  8. International Design Awards IDA,
  9. International Golden Trezzini,
  10. World Design Award.

Throughout his career, he has successfully conceived more than 100 architectural projects, encompassing a total of over 170,000 square meters, notable for their diversity in scales, complexities, and themes.

The work philosophy focuses on creating architectural projects that are respectful, thoughtful, and sustainable. To achieve this, a series of methodological strategies based on the principles of advanced architecture are applied, which constitute the fundamental axis for the development of each project. This scientific methodology ensures that each design is personalized, exclusive, and unique.

His methodology aligns with the “bottom-up” approach, where he plays the role of a catalyst or facilitator to interpret the needs of the users or inhabitants of each project.

For over a decade, he has shared this knowledge with several generations of architects at the Universidad De Las Américas in Quito, where he worked as a professor of architectural design. Additionally, he has contributed to the academic field with publications and has supervised over 40 thesis projects.

His projects have been featured in several architecture magazines both nationally and internationally, granting him the opportunity to deliver lectures and talks at various universities in the region and in Europe.

The commitment, knowledge, and excellence of José Daniel Terán have made a lasting impact on Ecuadorian architecture. His internationally acclaimed and award-winning projects continue to inspire future generations with their innovative and sustainable approach.
