5 Tips for Creating a Healthy Work Environment

We live in an increasingly sedentary world, as more and more workers are spending eight hours per day or more in front of their computers. This can lead to poor posture, back pain, and other ailments. Whether you’re the owner of a startup or the CEO of a major corporation, take these tips from our registered chiropractor in the Boston area on how to create a healthy work environment so that you and your employees remain healthy, active, and productive all year long.

1) Employees sleep better

A bad night’s sleep can negatively impact your job performance. Research has shown that tired employees are more likely to make mistakes, leave work early, arrive late and steal from their employers. It’s not surprising then that offering proper employee sleeping quarters is good for business. Create a comfortable and restful environment in your office by supplying workers with adequate workstations, ergonomic chairs and of course, plenty of darkness.

2) Employees are happier

If you want to keep your employees engaged and motivated, you need to do more than give them a paycheck. One way to increase morale and productivity is by offering healthy snacks at work, keeping an ergonomic workspace, or participating in team-building activities that aren’t just game night (because game night is great). If it makes people happier at work, then chances are they’ll be more productive when they’re there. Everyone wins!

3) Employees are healthier

A 2010 study by researchers at Stanford University found that when employees were given financial incentives to lose weight, they did. One group of participants was put on a diet and exercise program, while another group was given about $4 per pound lost. After three months, members of both groups had shed pounds, but those in the reward program showed significant improvement in triglyceride levels—an indicator of cardiovascular health—compared with their peers. And, sure enough, when members kept their weight off over 12 months, they got bonuses.

4) Employees boost company productivity

A motivated, productive workforce is not only good for employee morale but it also increases productivity. What’s more, studies show companies with happy employees are significantly more profitable than their less cheerful counterparts.  So if you want to see your company succeed, consider these tips for creating a healthy work environment.

5) Happy employees improve business culture

Business owners who focus on creating a happy and healthy work environment reap benefits that include increased worker productivity, lower employee turnover, better morale and an improved workplace culture. The more time your employees spend at work, the happier they’ll be. And it’s not just about implementing fun company events like Happy Hour or company outings; there are also ways to improve overall happiness in your office by focusing on health.
